Trichomoniasis: Testing and Treatment
Medically reviewed by Dr Vafa Derakshan, MBBS, FRACGP · AHPRA MED0001663310 · Last reviewed: 23 September 2026
Trichomoniasis ("trich") is a common STI caused by a tiny parasite. It's easy to treat with tablets, but many people don't know they have it.
Symptoms
In the vagina, it can cause a smelly, often heavy or frothy discharge, and itching or soreness of the vulva. Up to half of vaginal infections cause no symptoms, and infection in the penis usually causes none.
Who's most affected
In Australia, trichomoniasis is more common in older people and in people living in regional and remote areas.
How you're tested
A self-collected vaginal swab or a urine sample. We send a bulk-billed pathology request to your phone for any local collection centre.
Treatment online
Trichomoniasis is treated with antibiotic tablets, usually for 7 days, or sometimes as a single larger dose. Take them with food. Avoid alcohol during treatment and for at least 24 hours afterwards. If you test positive, your doctor can send an eScript to your phone.
Partners
Your current partner(s) should be treated at the same time, even without symptoms, so you don't pass it back and forth. Avoid sex for 7 days after starting treatment, or until treatment is finished and symptoms have gone, whichever is longer.
After treatment
A test after treatment isn't needed unless symptoms continue. If they do, a repeat test is recommended after 4 weeks.
Pregnancy
Untreated trichomoniasis in pregnancy is linked to premature labour and low birth weight, so tell your doctor if you're pregnant.
