Bulk-billed STI testing across Australia

STI Doctor is a telehealth service, so you don't need to live near us to be seen. You talk to an Australian GP by phone or video, and if you need tests the doctor sends an electronic pathology request that you take to a collection centre near home, work or uni. Your results come back to the doctor, and we contact you about anything that needs treatment.
The city and regional pages below cover what's different about getting tested in each area: the nearest collection centres, the local public sexual health clinic, and where to get PEP after hours. If your town isn't listed, the service works the same way anywhere in Australia.
How it works, wherever you are
- Book a consult. Bulk-billed for Medicare card holders; a private fee applies if you don't have Medicare.
- Talk to the doctor. They check which tests you actually need based on your symptoms, partners and timing, rather than a one-size-fits-all panel.
- Get tested locally. Take the request to any approved collection centre. Most urine, swab and blood tests don't need an appointment.
- Results and treatment. If something is positive, the doctor explains it and can send an e-script to your pharmacy. Partners can be treated too.

Pathology collection centres
A request from STI Doctor can be used at any approved pathology collection centre in Australia. Most of our patients use one of the major networks:
- Laverty Pathology (NSW)
- Melbourne Pathology (VIC)
- Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology (QLD)
- Clinipath Pathology (WA)
- Western Diagnostic Pathology (WA)
- Clinpath Pathology (SA)
- Hobart Pathology (TAS)
- Capital Pathology (ACT)
- Sonic Healthcare (national)
Other networks such as Australian Clinical Labs, Dorevitch, QML and 4Cyte also accept standard pathology requests. Bulk-billing policies for Medicare-eligible tests are set by each lab, so ask at the counter if you're unsure.
Not in one of these cities?
You can still use the service. Start with online STI testing, or read about STI treatment. If you've had a possible HIV exposure in the last 72 hours, see PEP now and don't wait for a test. Students can read our guide to STI testing for university students.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to go to a clinic?
No. The consult is by phone or video. You only visit a collection centre if the doctor orders tests, and that is usually a short walk-in visit.
Can I use a lab that isn't listed?
Yes. The request works at any approved pathology collection centre in Australia, including in regional and rural towns.
Is it really bulk billed?
For Medicare card holders, the consult and Medicare-eligible tests are bulk-billed. If you don't have Medicare, including many international students and visitors, a private fee applies and the lab may charge for tests.
How long do results take?
Most results are back within a few days. Some tests, like syphilis confirmation, can take longer.
