Chlamydia: Testing and Treatment
Medically reviewed by Dr Vafa Derakshan, MBBS, FRACGP · AHPRA MED0001663310 · Last reviewed: 23 September 2026
Chlamydia is one of the most common STIs in Australia, and most people who have it don't know. Australian guidelines note that 85 to 90% of people with chlamydia have no symptoms. It's easy to test for and, in most cases, easy to treat with tablets.
Symptoms
When there are symptoms, they can include pain when you pee, discharge from the penis or vagina, testicular pain or pelvic pain.
How you're tested
A urine sample or a self-collected vaginal swab (the preferred test if you have a vagina), plus throat or anal swabs depending on the kind of sex you've had. We send a bulk-billed pathology request to your phone for any local collection centre.
Treatment online
Chlamydia is usually treated with a 7-day course of antibiotic tablets, or a single-dose antibiotic if a 7-day course would be difficult. If you test positive, your doctor can send an eScript to your phone. Avoid sex until 7 days after starting treatment, and until your partners have been treated.
Partners and retesting
Partners from the last 6 months should be tested and treated. You can tell them anonymously through Let Them Know. Reinfection is common, so guidelines recommend a repeat test 3 months after treatment.
Why treatment matters
Untreated chlamydia can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), inflammation of the testicles, infertility, ectopic pregnancy and reactive arthritis.
When to be seen in person
If you have lower abdominal or pelvic pain, fever, pain during sex, testicular pain or swelling, or you're pregnant, tell your doctor. You may need an examination or different treatment. If you're very unwell, call 000.
Frequently asked questions
Can chlamydia be treated online?
Yes, in most cases. It's usually treated with a course of tablets, and your doctor can send an eScript to your phone after your consult.
Is chlamydia testing bulk billed?
For eligible Medicare card holders, the consultation is bulk-billed and standard chlamydia tests are covered by Medicare. You pay the usual PBS price for any medicine.
Do I need a test after treatment?
A test of cure isn't routinely needed, except in pregnancy and some other situations your doctor will explain. Guidelines do recommend a repeat test at 3 months, because reinfection is common.
Do I have to tell my partners?
Partners from the last 6 months should be tested and treated. You can tell them yourself, or anonymously using Let Them Know. Chlamydia is also a notifiable condition, which means positive results are reported confidentially to the state health department.
