HIV Testing

Medically reviewed by Dr Vafa Derakshan, MBBS, FRACGP · AHPRA MED0001663310 · Last reviewed: 23 September 2026

Many people who've recently got HIV have no symptoms, so testing is the only way to know. Some people get a flu-like illness 1 to 3 weeks after infection. Our doctors can arrange a bulk-billed HIV test and explain your results.

How you're tested

A blood test at any local pathology collection centre. The standard test detects most infections from about 6 weeks after exposure. Your doctor may recommend repeating it at 12 weeks, depending on when you were exposed. If you've used a rapid or self-test and it was positive, you need a blood test to confirm it.

Had a possible exposure in the last 72 hours?

Don't wait to test. You may need HIV PEP, which must start within 72 hours.

If your result is positive

Your doctor will talk you through the result and connect you with an HIV specialist or accredited (s100) prescriber, who manages HIV treatment. Treatment today is daily tablets or long-acting injections. People with an undetectable viral load can't pass HIV on through sex (U=U). HIV is a notifiable condition, which means positive results are reported confidentially to the state health department.

Preventing HIV

If you're at ongoing risk, PrEP is highly effective at preventing HIV. HIV tests are part of a routine STI check.
